Hilarious gaffe, unlucky injury headline Oilers' horrible night in net
Just when you thought the season couldn’t get worse for the Edmonton Oilers’ goalies.
On Monday night, both of the Oilers' netminders dealt with difficult blows in Edmonton 5-2 loss to the red-hot New Jersey Devils.
Starting goalie Stuart Skinner gave the Devils a 2-1 lead when he completely whiffed on a pass, allowing Devils forward Nico Hischier to set up teammate Dawson Mercer for an easy goal.

There's a good chance we'll be seeing that gaffe on repeat for the better part of the next week.
If Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft had any ideas of pulling Skinner after his massive blunder, it would not have been possible after an unfortunate accident rendered backup Jack Campbell unable to play.
The goalie was sitting on the team’s bench in the first period when he was inadvertently hit by a stray puck. Campbell was clipped above the eye and was forced to head to the trainer’s room with a towel covering his face.
Campbell did not return for the second period and was still missing when the third period got underway in at Prudential Center.

Jack Campbell isn't on the bench for the Oilers to start the third period.

Campbell’s numbers have been bad since he signed a five-year, $25-million deal with Edmonton in the summer. He last got the crease on Nov. 10 against the Hurricanes in Carolina, allowing a career-high seven goals on 32 shots in a 7-2 loss. He has a .873 save percentage and a goals against average of 4.27. The Oilers have since turned to Skinner, with pundits wondering if he could eventually take over the starter’s job in Edmonton from his struggling partner.
The 24-year-old has been rock solid this season, sporting a 2.52 goals against average and .930 save percentage in nine games. The Oilers and their fans will hope this night of bad luck won't hurt his confidence.
The Devils, meanwhile, are taking the NHL by storm at the moment, tying a franchise record with their 13th consecutive win on Monday night.
