HBO Max unveils first look at LeBron James' 'Space Jam: A New Legacy'

The long-awaited sequel to “Space Jam” from LeBron James is only months away, and you won’t even have to leave home to see it.

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” is hitting both theaters and HBO Max on July 16, 2021 as part of a move by Warner Bros. to release its entire slate of movies in 2021 on the new streaming service. HBO Max released a 30-second sizzle reel on Saturday to remind everyone of that fact, and it included our first look at any scene from James’ upcoming movie.

Of course, that portion is only about two seconds long:

Miss it? Here’s a gif of the two shots:

So James and Bugs Bunny looking somewhat horrified, followed by ... somebody being abducted into what looks like a very shiny jumbotron. Eagle-eyed viewers may spot the likes of Looney Tunes Tweety Bird and Sylvester the Cat, plus what might be some other Warner Bros. properties and characters (Space Ghost? The Flintstones? The big water tower?).

The fact that our first taste of the movie is only two seconds long and only six months out from the release date is pretty consistent with the slow trickle of details — jerseys, co-stars, the actual name — that has come from Warner Bros. and James.

We found out the somewhat bonkers plot of the movie just last month:

When LeBron and his young son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I., LeBron must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.'s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of basketball stars as you've never seen them before. It's Tunes versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of his life, that will redefine LeBron's bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even "King" James by playing the game their own way.

We should see even more when the inevitable trailer comes out in the coming months.
