Gurriel brothers set MLB record, each hit pair of home runs on Friday night

It was a big, record-setting day for the Gurriel brothers on Friday — and they weren’t even in the same country.

Toronto Blue Jays shortshop Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel each hit two home runs in their first two at-bats on Friday night, marking the first time in MLB history that a pair of brothers has accomplished that feat in the same day.

Lourdes got the Blue Jays going on Friday night, hitting a solo homer in the first and fourth inning of their game against the Tampa Bay Rays at the Rodgers Centre.

His second home run, a deep fly ball to center field, sparked a second solo homer from Randal Grichuk right after him that tied the game back up.

Lourdes’ two home runs, paired with a homer in the ninth inning on Thursday night, not only capped a hot streak at the plate for the MLB rookie, but also made him the first rookie in Toronto history to hit a home run in three-straight plate appearances. He now has 11 home runs and 34 RBI on the season.

Despite his best efforts, though, the Blue Jays fell to the Rays 11-3.

Yuli delivered for the Astros almost instantly on Friday night at Minute Maid Park, drilling a grand slam over the right field wall in the bottom of the first inning to put Houston up 4-0 over the Los Angeles Angels.

He then hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the third inning, giving the Astros an early 6-0 lead.

Yuli now has 12 home runs and 80 RBI this season, and the six he drove in on Friday is a career high. The grand slam marked the third of his career.

Thanks to Yuli’s six runs, the Astros cruised to an 11-3 win against the Angels, clinching a trip to the postseason — their third appearance in four years.
