Kevin McKidd has discussed his future as Owen Hunt on the long-running Grey’s Anatomy.

The actor has played Owen for 14 seasons of the show, since he joined as Cristina Yang’s (Sandra Oh) love interest back in season 5 in 2008.

After Ellen Pompeo stepped back from her titular role, there was speculation that McKidd could follow suit, especially now he’s starring in more UK-based dramas including ITVX’s Six Four.

Yet, McKidd has confirmed that won't be the case. In fact, he’ll happily stay on the show as long as he's wanted.

He told RadioTimes.com: "I love playing my character on Grey’s. I love what it’s done for my life and it’s like a family. Truly.

"We’ve been there so long, we’ve seen people have babies, get married, have sad things happen in their lives, kids' graduations, it’s been so long now. It’s like my extended family, so I’m not going anywhere any time soon from that show."

Despite dispelling those rumours, the Scottish actor shared that he does want to spend more time in the UK working on TV dramas.

He added: "But do I want to work more in Britain when I get the chance? Absolutely, I’ve really missed it. I’ve missed the work ethic, the humour, the quality of British drama and I just love the crews. I love British actors, I’ve missed it.

"It’s felt like a real homecoming for me and I want to do more of it, but that is not me saying that I’m leaving Grey’s anytime soon. I’ll be there for as long as they want me to be there."

Grey's Anatomy was recently confirmed to be renewed for season 20, and discussing the show's future, McKidd suggested that it can run for "at least another couple of seasons".

"I think we’re going to keep going for as long as we can at this point," he said. "I will never – and none of us on the show at this point – will have another show or experience like this in our careers. It’s a world phenomenon, it has a global reach…

"I think we built something over the years that we’re all really proud of and I think we continue to feel proud of. So I think we’re just going to keep going until it feels like the natural time to stop."

Grey's Anatomy season 19 airs on Thursdays on ABC in the US. The show streams on Disney+ in the UK, where new episodes premiere on Wednesdays.
