Grandson of Kansas State coach Bill Snyder dies
Matthew Snyder, the grandson of Kansas State coach Bill Snyder and the son of KSU assistant Sean Snyder, died Wednesday. He was 22.
No cause of death has been made public and a Riley County [Kansas] Police Department spokesperson told KansasCity.com that the department was treating Matthew Snyder’s death as an “unattended death.” Other outlets say the death is being investigated as a suicide.
“Right now it is still being classified as an unattended death,” police spokesperson Hali Rowland said. “A suicide does fall under that category, but at this time ‘unattended death’ is the language that we are using until we can further investigate.”
According to the Manhattan Mercury, emergency personnel were called to the house of Sean Snyder and his wife Wanda on Wednesday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Snyder family during this very difficult time,” Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor said in a statement. “We are deeply saddened to learn of this news and ask that the family’s privacy continue to be respected. Sean, Wanda, and the entire Snyder family are greatly appreciative of the outpouring of support displayed by the K-State Family as they cope with this tragedy.”
Snyder, 78, is returning in 2018 to be Kansas State’s coach. He’ll turn 79 in October. His son Sean has served as the team’s special teams coach and director of football operations since 2011 and has been an assistant coach with the school since 1994.
