Warriors president and GM Bob Myers steps down after 11 seasons at helm

Golden State Warriors president and general manager Bob Myers is stepping down, sources confirmed on Tuesday to USA TODAY Sports. His contract is set to expire in June.

The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the announcement has not been made yet.

Myers is a two-time executive of the year after becoming general manager of the team in 2012. He was hired as an assistant GM the year prior and replaced Larry Riley when he was demoted to director of scouting. The Warriors went to the playoffs in nine of his 11 seasons at the helm and won four NBA Finals.

This season, Golden State attempted to defend its championship from last year, but lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals.

Even though Stephen Curry was drafted in 2009 before Myers joined the team, the GM helped develop the point guard into the superstar he is today. Toward the beginning of his tenure, Myers showed he believed in the rising star after Curry had two ankle surgeries and signed him to a four-year, $44 million contract extension.

"He's been a great just presence when it comes to, we were all young at one point in the sense of really trying to figure it out," Curry told NBC Sports in April. "I think one of his special abilities is to connect with you where you are, be truthful and honest and authentic about how difficult the NBA is in the sense of decisions that are made and the business side of it. But also he has just the personal touch that you trust. I don't ever take that for granted."

Myers hired head coach Steve Kerr in 2014 and helped broker the deal that brought Kevin Durant to the Warriors in 2016. The forward was the Finals MVP in 2017 and 2018.
