Golden Knights' Fleury posts win in first game back since father's death
In what was certainly an emotional contest for Marc-Andre Fleury, the Vegas Golden Knights’ goaltender turned aside 28 of the 29 shots he faced while defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 5-1 in the first game he suited up for since the death of his father.
“It was a hard week, and I feel when you go back on the ice, it changes your mind,” Fleury said to David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal earlier on Tuesday. “You’re trying to enjoy the game and be in the moment a bit. My teammates have been very supportive, too. And the fans. I’ve got so many nice notes. My friends and family. I feel very fortunate for that.”
Fleury missed seven games as he returned to his hometown of Sorel, Quebec, to be with his family during this tough time.
Andre Fleury, Marc-Andre’s father, died at the age of 63 on Nov. 27 after being ill for several months, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Fleury was moments away from recording a shutout in Tuesday night’s contest, but Blackhawks forward Dominik Kubalik scored a power-play marker with just 27 seconds left in the game to break the shutout.
Marc-Andre Fleury came within 0:27 seconds of a shutout in his first game since the passing of his father.
