The last thing the Anaheim Ducks need right now is John Gibson getting hurt.

That’s why the fan base had an aneurysm when Eric Stephens of the OC Register tweeted this out about two hours prior to game time:

The Ducks later clarified with a press release: Gibson is considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

Jonathan Bernier will get the start at home against the Boston Bruins tonight. Jhonas Enroth was called up from the San Diego Gulls to back up.

This happens to be the second consecutive start for Bernier.

He played on Monday night in Arizona and it was … not so great. He allowed 3 goals on 6 shots and was pulled after the first period. To give him credit, the team wasn’t great in front of him.

In the past month, Bernier has played in three games, something Randy Carlyle indicated as the team entered the second half of the season. On the year, Bernier’s amassed an 8-5-2 record with 2.93 goals-against and .901 save percentage.

If the team doesn’t wake up in front of Bernier and/or he can’t get rid of the yips, the team hopes to have a diamond in the rough of sorts with Enroth.

He started the season with the Toronto before being traded to Anaheim for a seventh-round 2018 draft pick. The Ducks immediately assigned him to San Diego and he’s flourished. Enroth has amassed thus far a 10-2-0 record with 1.42 GAA and .944 SV%. The team got a boost too, going on a 13 game streak without a regulation loss.

As for Gibson, he’s been nagged by hip and groin injuries throughout his young career. We don’t know if either of those are what he’s currently suffering from. This is the first non-flu related scratch for Gibson this year.

In his first season as the definitive No. 1 goal in Anaheim, he’s setting career highs in game played. Last year he’s played in 40 games; so far this year, he’s at 48 games played. His record stands at 23-15-8 with 2.24 GAA and .922 SV%.

Obviously the Ducks want Gibson back soon, but they are fortunate in the fact they haven’t had their bye week yet. It starts after this Saturday’s afternoon game against the Los Angeles Kings.

Depending on how banged up Gibson actually is, he may sit out the Kings contest to get some time additional recovery time. If the Ducks want to do anything in the playoffs, they need Gibson in the best possible shape. Might as well take advantage of the time off to make sure he gets there.
