Giants to Odell Beckham: You need to control your emotions

You can’t play football without emotion. But too much emotion isn’t a good thing either.

It’s a fine line, and New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham has found himself on the wrong side of it. He was last year when he got involved in numerous scuffles with then-Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman, and that cost him a one-game suspension. On Sunday, his emotions got the best of him in his rematch against Norman, who is now with the Washington Redskins.

Everyone laughed at Beckham losing his battle against the kicking net, but the Giants weren’t impressed. At one point, the television broadcast showed Beckham on the sideline and it looked like he had tears in his eyes.

Giants coach Ben McAdoo said Monday that he became a distraction during the game.

“He needs to control his emotions better and become less of a distraction to himself and to his teammates,” McAdoo said, according to the Giants’ transcripts. “It’s our job to help him with that process and maturing.”

McAdoo said he and Beckham had two different conversations about his outbursts during the game, and he will keep working with Beckham.

“Communication. Having a variety of different people, coaches, staff members to communicate with,” McAdoo said. “Just help him direct his focus.”

Beckham’s teammates seemed confused why he was going crazy on the sideline and losing his cool in a tight game with the Redskins, a game the Giants ended up losing, 29-27.

“I was trying to figure out what was going on, why he was getting frustrated,” quarterback Eli Manning said, according to NJ.com. “He was getting catches, he was making plays and we just need everybody to stay calm. We don’t need to get rattled, we don’t need to get fired up.”

It’s a serious issue for the Giants. But that didn’t stop social media from making fun of Beckham’s mishap with the kicking net, including Bleacher Report’s hilarious “Mortal Kombat” spoof. Avoiding a repeat should be enough motivation for Beckham to keep his cool:
