Georgia defensive tackle Trenton Thompson has withdrawn from classes this semester as he deals with a “significant medical issue.”

After multiple reports emerged Thursday saying Thompson was hospitalized Wednesday night, Georgia athletics said in a statement that Thompson was “recently discharged from the hospital and remains under close medical care.” No details of his condition were provided, other than that it “required emergency hospitalization and extended hospital stay.”

Wednesday night’s hospital trip stemmed from “an adverse reaction to medications prescribed specifically for his medical condition.” He was released Thursday.

“With respect to (Wednesday) night’s incident, the physical appearance and behavior described in the UGA PD report is solely related to an adverse reaction to medications prescribed specifically for his medical condition,” UGA’s statement said. “The adverse reaction required emergency transport to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released.

According to a police report, Thompson was found “wandering in the roadway” near campus and “appeared very unsteady on his feet.” He also had “very bloodshot” eyes. The report says Thompson later told an officer, who asked if he was on medication, that he had taken “two oxies” (OxyContin).

Georgia’s statement said “toxicology tests were negative for OxyContin.”

“We cannot release any further information at this time due to federal privacy laws,” the statement says. “Due to the medical issues, Trenton is withdrawing from classes this semester, and his family requests privacy during this time.”

Thompson, a 6-foot-4, 309-pound defensive tackle, played in all 13 games for the Bulldogs as a sophomore in 2016, making seven starts. He finished the season with 56 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. He was the MVP of the team’s Liberty Bowl win over TCU when he had eight tackles and three sacks.

Thompson was a five-star recruit, No. 7 overall nationally, in the 2015 class.
