GdS: ‘Like Montolivo and Romagnoli’ – Calabria latest captain to leave Milan for free
Davide Calabria has lost his starting spot at AC Milan and despite still being the captain of the team, he’s expected to leave the club on a free transfer. According to a report, the renewal talks have come to a complete halt.
The No.2’s contract will expire at the end of the season and for months now, reports have suggested that no progress has been made on this front. As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport this morning, his situation is ‘like Montolivo and Romagnoli’, who also left as captains on free transfers.
Compared to the history of the club, the trend has certainly changed for the captain’s armband as many players have worn it in the last ten years. Furthermore, as we saw with Riccardo Montolivo and Alessio Romagnoli, the captain doesn’t even have to be a starter for the team.
In the Scudetto season, for example, Romagnoli wasn’t one of the starting centre-backs due to poor performances and an injury. This season, it has been exactly the same scenario for Calabria as Emerson Royal has climbed to the top of the pecking order.
In any case, as the report states, negotiations between Milan and Calabria over a contract renewal have fallen through and barring any surprises, he will leave for free in the summer. Even if he’s not a world-class right-back, this would still be a great shame given his Rossonero heart and value, which stands at around €10-15m.
