Ahead 24-22 at the 6:07 mark in the first half, Jacksonville State closed out the period on a 13-4 run to take a 37-26 lead into halftime.

Austin Peay (5-16, 1-6) cut the lead to six, 47-41 with 11:38 remaining, but the Gamecocks responded with a 12-6 run, capped by Gaines' 3-pointer, making it 59-47 with 7:27 left.

Two free throws by Austin Peay's Corey Arentsen made it 73-68 with 53 seconds left, but Jacksonville State made two field goals and converted four straight free throws to seal the victory.

Chris Horton had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Governors, who are still winless on the road.
