Manchester City goal hero Gabriel Jesus revealed his ‘ambition’ to reach the goalscoring feats of teammate Sergio Aguero.

The Brazilian, deputising for an injured Aguero, netted twice as City thrashed Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor.

Jesus picked up his sixth and seventh goals of the campaign after something of a drought having failed to find the target in his last eight appearances.

Aguero on the other hand has 13 in just 16 appearances of an injury-interrupted season.

Speaking afterwards to Amazon, the striker admitted his hopes to match the high standards of his fellow South American.

"I know my quality and I can score goals every game but sometimes it is not like that,” He said. “I have to learn from Sergio as he's a legend of the club.

“Sergio scores every time and that is my ambition.”

Jesus gave City the lead in the first half with a stunning curled effort before volleying home from close range just after the break.

Rodri and Riyad Mahrez extended their advantage before Robbie Brady’s last minute consolation for the Clarets.

After what has been a difficult few weeks that has seen the champions fall away from runaway leaders Liverpool, the win and performance were extremely welcome among City ranks.

"It was an important game.” Jesus added. “We are eight points behind so a win is good for us.”

“Liverpool have had a good season but tonight we played well.

“These goals are for the supporters and thanks for supporting me."

Manager Pep Guardiola was also full of praise for his frontman, claiming Jesus is more than capable of stepping up in Aguero’s absence.

"We need Gabriel Jesus, strikers are there to score goals and we need him. Strikers like him and Sergio Aguero live for goals.

"It’s not easy to replace Sergio but the team doesn’t have doubts about Jesus. The quality of the strikers make the difference."
