Furniture Row Racing owner Barney Visser hospitalized after heart attack
Furniture Row Racing said Friday that team owner Barney Visser was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack on Saturday.
The team said Visser had successful bypass surgery on Monday and is expected to be released from the hospital in the coming days. However, the heart attack and recovery period will prevent him from being able to travel to the final two races of the Cup Series season.
FRR driver Martin Truex Jr. has been the season’s most dominant driver and clinched a chance at the championship next week at Homestead-Miami Speedway after finishing second at Texas.
“It’s a chance of a lifetime to be in position to win the NASCAR Cup Series championship,” Visser said in a statement. “I hope to be in touch with Martin and [crew chief Cole Pearn] leading up to Homestead and participate without too much excitement.”
The team said Visser checked himself into the hospital on Saturday after experiencing numbness.
Furniture Row expanded to two cars in 2017 with the addition of Erik Jones to the team. But with Jones replacing Matt Kenseth in the No. 20 in 2018, Furniture Row is contracting back to just one car next season. 5-Hour Energy, Jones’ sponsor in 2017, will move over and be a co-primary sponsor of Truex’s car in 2018.
Because of Monster Energy’s title sponsorship of the Cup Series, 5-Hour had to stay with FRR if it wanted to stay in the Cup Series.
