Now The Hollywood Reporter reports that all six main cast members, and Friends creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, are “in talks” to reunite on upcoming on-demand service HBO Max.

While insider sources warn a deal is far from finalised, there is finally a plan in place for how the Friends stars will commemorate the much-loved show in a way fans can share.

The talks currently under way involve an unscripted reunion special. Deals now need to be completed with all involved and schedules locked down in order for the special to become a reality.

HBO Max and producer Warner Bros TV declined to comment.

Rumours of a Friends reunion began circulating in 2014, 10 years after the original show ended, and the show has gained a new audience after becoming available on streaming service Netflix.

This year Aniston, 50, and her co-stars - 55-year-old Cox, LeBlanc, 52, 50-year-old Perry, Kudrow, 56, and 53-year-old Schwimmer have been fuelling the rumours. Last month Aniston joined Instagram and her very first post was a selfie with the rest of her Friends co-stars.

Speaking on Ellen DeGeneres’ US talk show, Aniston denied there would be a reboot but said: "We would love for there to be something, but we don't know what that something is.

"So we're just trying. We're working on something."

Friends began as a story about a group of 20-somethings negotiating their journey into adult life – learning to earn a living and looking for love.

The last episode saw the pals moving out of their iconic Manhattan apartment overlooking Central Park, as Monica (Cox) and Chandler (Perry) leave for to the suburbs to become parents to their surrogate twins.

Free spirit Phoebe (Kudrow) is married to boyfriend Mike and Rachel has given up her dream job in Paris to reunite with on-off love Ross (Schwimmer).
