French Open LIVE: Tennis scores, updates and results as Casper Ruud beats Holger Rune

Iga Swiatek was a straight-sets winner against Coco Gauff in the French Open quarter-finals today, with Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud in men’s quarter-final action later on.

Swiatek vs Gauff marked a rematch of last year’s women’s final, which the Pole won handily to claim her second title at Roland Garros. World No 1 Swiatek, also a champion here in 2020, repeated that result this afternoon, beating 19-year-old Gauff 6-4, 6-2.

Swiatek, 22, will play Beatriz Haddad Maia in the semi-finals, after the Brazilian came from behind to beat Ons Jabeur in three sets this morning. With her win, Haddad Maia became the first woman from her country to reach the French Open semi-finals in the open era.

Later in the day, last year’s men’s finalist Casper Ruud plays sixth seed Holger Rune, and Alexander Zverev faces the unseeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry in their quarter-finals. The winners of those ties will face each other in the semi-finals. On the other side of the draw is a mouth-watering clash between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.

He broke in the fourth game of the set to move 3-1 ahead and doggedly held on from there. He let a couple of match points slip on Rune’s serve at 5-2 bit then held his nerve to serve it out for a 6-3 triumph.

The opening game of the set sees Ruud break serve and the double break comes in the fifth game. Rune wins just his third game of the match with a second hold of serve in the seventh game but Ruud needs just one attempt to serve things out, although the game does go to deuce, and a fist pump shows what it means

It’s an unbelievable opening set from Casper Ruud as he simply blows Holger Rune away. The Norwegian races into a 3-0 lead and although Rune then finally gets on the board, a second break shortly follows.

He serves for the set at 5-1 and there’s no issue for the fourth seed as he cruises to take that game to 15 and, in 28 minutes, he’s a set to the good. What a start!

The first is saved comfortably by Zverev and then a big first serve sets him up to save the second as well! Big serve, powerful backhand, opponent goes long - it’s a good recipe.
