Fourth seed Casper Ruud and holder Iga Swiatek stayed on course to reach consecutive finals at the French Open, but Jannik Sinner later squandered two match points in his five-set loss to German Daniel Altmaier in an epic battle lasting more than five hours.
Elena Rybakina also booked a third round spot with a 6-3 6-3 victory over rising Czech teenager Linda Noskova with the fourth seed and Wimbledon champion dazzling again on Parisian clay as one of the top contenders for the Grand Slam title.
Swiatek, who is looking to lift the Suzanne Lenglen Cup for the third time in four years, briefly struggled against American Claire Liu but returned to her rampant best with another bagel in her 6-4 6-0 victory.
Twelfth seed Frances Tiafoe fought back from a set down to defeat Aslan Karatsev 3-6 6-3 7-5 6-2 but 18th seed Alex De Minaur fell in straight sets to Argentina’s Tomas Etcheverry.

Attention is ramping up again on the French Open’s scheduling, with the night session so far exclusively featuring men’s matches.
Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo had to apologise last year after saying men’s matches had more appeal as a justification for only one women’s match featuring in the 10 prime-time sessions across the fortnight.
The French Open is unique among the grand slams in having only one match in its late slot and, in the first five days, that will be a men’s contest every time.
With fifth seed Caroline Garcia bowing out on Wednesday, the chances of a women’s match making the cut have reduced further, and former finalist Sloane Stephens hit out after her 6-2 6-1 win over Varvara Gracheva.
“I’m on the player council and we’ve had a lot of conversations about this and we’ve had a lot of conversations about equality,” said the American. “Four out of four men’s matches. That’s not what we talk about. That’s not what we’re about.”

Emma Raducanu has announced the end of her latest partnership with a coach, as the 20-year-old continues her recovery from injury.
The 2021 US Open winner is currently sidelined after operations on both hands and her left ankle, after opting for several surgeries to correct a series of injuries, the latest of which saw her pull out of the Madrid Open.
She has thus missed out on this week’s French Open and is set to miss Wimbledon too, along with most or all of the grass-court season.
In the meantime, her search for a longer-lasting coach will go on, with Raducanu announcing that she has parted ways with Sebastian Sachs after fewer than six months working together.

The governing body of women’s tennis paved the way for the first combined WTA-ATP tournament at the 500 level on Thursday as it approved the move of its San Jose event to Washington this year.
San Jose’s Silicon Valley Classic, founded in 1971 by American great Billie Jean King, has been held at venues across the west coast, including Stanford University and in Oakland, California.
It will shift to Washington and take place from July 29 to Aug. 6 alongside the men’s event at the Rock Creek Tennis Center as a warm-up for the U.S. Open.
“The legacy of this much-loved event will live on in its new home,” WTA chairman Steve Simon said.

World number seven Ons Jabeur played the odds in her French Open match against daredevil Oceane Dodin on Thursday to win 6-2 6-3 and march into the third round.
Jabeur has endured a stop-start season in which she had minor knee surgery before winning the title in Charleston and skipping the Madrid Open with a calf problem.
While it may not have been the preparation she would have liked for Paris, Jabeur has looked solid in her two matches so far, having reached the third round without dropping a set.
The Tunisian initially struggled to control Dodin’s power game as the 26-year-old French world number 122 attacked almost every ball, playing with considerable risk.
While she made many difficult points, Dodin missed several easier ones, including two volleys, to send Jabeur 4-2 up.
The Tunisian’s drop shot is arguably the best in the women’s game and the 28-year-old world number seven made full use of it on her next service game to move 5-2 ahead.
Dodin’s risky play did not pay off when another audacious crosscourt forehand flew wide to hand Jabeur the first set.
The pair then traded early breaks but Dodin’s errors gradually piled up as Jabeur clinched the contest on her third match point to end the French presence in the women’s draw.
It is the third time in five years that no French player has made the third round of the women’s competition.

Russian qualifier Mirra Andreeva continued to enjoy a dream Grand Slam debut as the 16-year-old stormed into the third round with a 6-1 6-2 win over Frenchwoman Diane Parry, though she admitted to having butterflies in her stomach.
“I’m happy that you don’t see that I’m nervous,” the youngster added. “I hide it pretty well.”
American Kayla Day made no secret of her success after her stunning 6-2 4-6 6-4 win over compatriot Madison Keys, thanking her Czech roots for enhancing her tennis skills.
“My mom, she was born and raised in Prague, and I speak fluent Czech. That’s the only reason why I’m good at tennis, because I’m half Czech.”

Jannik Sinner wasted two match points as he was knocked out of the French Open 6-7(0) 7-6(7) 1-6 7-6(4) 7-5 in a second round thriller against German Daniel Altmaier on Thursday.
The red-haired Italian, who is often cheered on by six fans dressed as carrots - the Carota boys - and was spotted eating carrots as an on-court snack in Vienna, was not his dominant self as he bowed out after five hours 26 minutes.
Eighth-seeded Sinner, whose best performance at Roland Garros came in 2020 when he lost in the quarter-finals against Rafael Nadal, looked set for a no-nonsense win after cruising through the third set but Altmaier had other ideas.
While Sinner’s hard-hitting approach works on hard courts, he struggles on the slowest surface, which proves more challenging, and he was eventually worn down by the world number 79, who won on his fifth match point on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Andy Murray will return to action next week at the Lexus Surbiton Trophy.
As expected, having skipped the French Open to focus on his Wimbledon preparations, the former world number one has taken a wild card into the Challenger event.
Murray played the second-tier tournament, which always attracts a strong field, last year for the first time since 2004, losing in the semi-finals to Denis Kudla.
Murray said: “The LTA’s Lexus Surbiton Trophy is a great way for me to start my grass-court season. It’s nice to play somewhere that has the feel of a traditional club and I’m hoping to get some good matches and practice in there during the week in front of the British fans.”

It takes a fifth match point and an absolutely humungous serve to land an ace and, at long last, a five-set victory over five hours and 26 minutes.
The fifth-longest match in Roland Garros history and unseeded Altmaier is in tears at the end of it, a mammoth effort from both players. Jannik Sinner exits in the second round.

An absolutely crazy fifth set here. Altmaier had three match points on his own serve, Sinner took them all, the German picked up advantage for a fourth match point and the young Italian produced an absolutely devastating shot down the side to pull back once more.
Sinner soon then had three break points himself but he also couldn’t seal the game - he ends the third one smashing his racquet into the ground in frustrated fashion.
On we go! Still deuce and 5-6 in the fifth set, Altmaier serving.

Last year’s runner-up Casper Ruud turned on the style at the French Open before the fourth seed showed steel to quell Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri 6-3 6-2 4-6 7-5 and move into the third round on Thursday.
The Norwegian brought a touch of flair to Court Philippe Chatrier in classy blue pinstriped shorts and barely fluffed his lines early on, forcing an inexperienced Zeppieri into a corner by badgering him from the baseline.
Ruud’s performance on clay this year has ebbed and flowed but the Estoril champion made quick work of the first set under the Parisian sun after being gifted the decisive break when Zeppieri blasted a forehand long.
The world number four raced through the next set to double his advantage as the left-handed Zeppieri sprayed the errors in a nervy display before regaining composure to peg Ruud back.
Ruud’s superb court coverage ensured he broke for a 3-2 lead in the fourth set but Zeppieri struck back to level at 5-5 with a fiery inside-out winner, only to surrender serve immediately and allow Ruud to close out the victory.

Slightly bizarre tennis-related update:
After a career spent navigating the toughest opponents on the court, 20-times major winner Roger Federer will now help commuters navigate the open road, as the newest voice of driving app Waze.
The retired, polyglottic tennis star can offer directions in English, French, or German, and is the first person to record custom navigation in three different languages, the navigation app said on Wednesday.
The 41-year-old Swiss offers a variety of motivational messages to drivers, on top of basic directions.
“It’s drive time - I can feel the adrenaline kicking in already,” Federer says in one recording.
He begins another commute by telling drivers: “Time to ride! Trust your ability. I’m ready to coach you along the way.”
Federer joins an assortment of celebrity voices on the navigation app, which Alphabet Inc acquired for $1 billion in 2013, including pop stars Christina Aguilera and the Jonas Brothers.

Aryna Sabalenka was confronted by a Ukrainian journalist in a tense exchange at the French Open on Wednesday, where the Belarusian declined to answer questions about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion and world No 2, was asked by the reporter to condemn Belarus’ role in supporting Russia’s invasion and whether she personally supports authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko - who is a close ally of Vladimir Putin.
After her first-round win over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk on Sunday, Sabalenka said, “Nobody in this world, Russian athletes or Belarusian athletes, support the war”.
But as Sabalenka advanced to the third round on Wednesday, the Ukrainian journalist asked Sabalenka to condemn the invasion and the role Belarus is playing to support Russia in the conflict.

The case of his detention and deportation from Australia drew worldwide attention and sparked anger in his homeland, Serbia. His father, Srdjan, remained adamant that Djokovic was “the Spartacus of the new world” and that “he is like water and water paves its own path”.
His father’s reaction may be indicative, but Djokovic’s unorthodox world view and scepticism of societal norms have been advertised, and self-promoted, for several years. After all, it was in his own book, Serve to Win, that he detailed the moment his transformative gluten-free diet began in 2010, when he self-diagnosed a celiac allergy by pressing a slice of bread against his abdomen.

That’s her eighth win in a row - a run that extends back to her Italian Open triumph. It’s unlikely that her third-round opponent, either Sara Sorribes Tormo or Petra Martic, will cause too many problems.

Rybakina wins! That last game was the story of the match - Noskova had opportunities at times, but couldn’t take them. Rybakina saves four out of four break points on her way to winning in straight sets and was just too good when it really counted for the 18-year-old Czech. The Wimbledon champion is through to the third round.

Aryna Sabalenka was confronted by a Ukrainian journalist in a tense exchange at the French Open on Wednesday, where the Belarusian declined to answer questions about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion and world No 2, was asked by the reporter to condemn Belarus’ role in supporting Russia’s invasion and whether she personally supports authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko - who is a close ally of Vladimir Putin.
After her first-round win over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk on Sunday, Sabalenka said, “Nobody in this world, Russian athletes or Belarusian athletes, support the war”.
But as Sabalenka advanced to the third round on Wednesday, the Ukrainian journalist asked Sabalenka to condemn the invasion and the role Belarus is playing to support Russia in the conflict.
“I’ve got no comments to you,” Sabalenka said in response to the journalist during her post-match press conference.

Rybakina rallies from 0-30 down in the next game but recovers smoothly with a calm overhand and backhand crosscourt winner. Noskova recovers well to hold her own serve and the Czech is showing plenty of promise in the early stages.

Rybakina also faced Czech teenager in the first round, defeating 16-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova in straight sets to open her Roland Garros bid.
“First matches not the easiest. I didn’t start that well. I was rushing a bit. After I started a bit better, so overall happy with the first match.”

French Open: Cameron Norrie urges video replays after French Open dispute over double bounce

Cameron Norrie said video replays should be used to help umpires make the right call on dubious points after he got away with a double bounce in Wednesday’s second round victory over Lucas Pouille at the French Open.
France’s Pouille thought he had won a point in the third set after a deft drop shot, but umpire Eva Asderaki failed to see the ball bounce twice, as Norrie won the point amid boos from the home crowd.
Pouille said Norrie was under no obligation to concede the point as players are sometimes unsure if the ball bounces twice. But he added that the umpire should have had the option to check the replay, a view shared by Norrie.
“I think that would be great... We have the technology to do it. I don’t know why we’re not doing it in all aspects,” Norrie told reporters after he beat Pouille 6-1 6-3 6-3.
“Sometimes tournaments where they have Hawkeye (technology) for the TV and then for the match they don’t use it... I think we should be using it.
“We all make mistakes, the umpires make mistakes. I think he’s right. It was just one of those calls, a tough call in the moment. From the replay, for me, it looks like she got it wrong.”

Gael Monfils out of Roland Garros with wrist injury

Sixth seed Holger Rune was given free passage through to the third round after Gael Monfils called a press conference late on Wednesday evening to announce he was pulling out of their clash scheduled for the night session on Thursday because of a wrist injury.
The 36-year-old played the match of the tournament so far on Tuesday night, fighting off cramp to defeat Sebastian Baez in five sets, and he said: “I’m not really sure what I feel, but it’s more than being disappointed. How many Roland Garroses will I play?”
Alexander Zverev vs Alex Molcan will now headline the night session on Philippe-Chatrier tonight.
French Open under fire again over no women’s matches in night sessions

Attention is ramping up again on the French Open’s scheduling, with the night session so far exclusively featuring men’s matches.
Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo had to apologise last year after saying men’s matches had more appeal as a justification for only one women’s match featuring in the 10 prime-time sessions across the fortnight.
The French Open is unique among the grand slams in having only one match in its late slot and, in the first five days, that will be a men’s contest every time.
With fifth seed Caroline Garcia bowing out on Wednesday, the chances of a women’s match making the cut have reduced further, and former finalist Sloane Stephens hit out after her 6-2 6-1 win over Varvara Gracheva.
“I’m on the player council and we’ve had a lot of conversations about this and we’ve had a lot of conversations about equality,” said the American. “Four out of four men’s matches. That’s not what we talk about. That’s not what we’re about.”

Novak Djokovic admitted he is fuelled by drama as the fall-out continued from his controversial message about Kosovo.
He told Serbian media he would do it again but, after beating Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 7-6 (2) 6-0 6-3 in the second round, he opted just for a signature and smiley face.
At his post-match press conference, Djokovic said: “I would say it again, but I don’t need to because you have my quotes if you want to reflect on that.
“Of course I’m aware that a lot of people would disagree, but it is what it is. It’s something that I stand for. So that’s all. Drama-free grand slam, I don’t think it can happen for me. I guess that drives me, as well.”

The French Open continues on Thursday and women’s No1 seed Iga Swiatek returns to action for her second-round tie.
Wednesday saw Britain’s Cameron Norrie fire his way through to the third round in straight sets, with Novak Djokovic following him through later on.
But there was an upset for the home fans in the women’s singles as Caroline Garcia was knocked out by unseeded Anna Blinkova, a Russian-born athlete playing under no flag at Roland Garros.
Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula and Elina Svitolina were among the others to make it through to the third round in the women’s draw, with Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas doing likewise in the men’s.

The French Open continues at Roland Garros as Iga Swiatek resumes her title defence, with Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur all in action on day five. Swiatek, who celebrated her 22nd birthday on Wednesday, faces the American Claire Liu while Rybakina takes on the Czech teenager Linda Noskova.
In the men’s draw, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz remain on a collision course at the French Open after both advanced to the third round. Djokovic kept his focus on the court amid his latest controversy as he saw off Marton Fucsovics in straight sets.
