French Open LIVE: Scores and results from Roland Garros after Gael Monfils wins five-set thriller

Thiago Seyboth Wild produced the upset of the French Open so far as the world No 172 stunned second seed Daniil Medvedev in five sets. The Brazilian, 23, arrived at Roland Garros having never won a main draw match at a grand slam but prevailed against the world No 2 7-6, 6-7, 2-6 6-3 6-4. Seyboth Wild produced an astonishingly aggressive game to secure the shock result, which was also the first time he had ever played a fifth set.

In the last match of the day, veteran home favourite Gael Monfils produced a stunning comeback in a frenzied late-night atmosphere to defeat Sebastian Baez in five sets. The 36-year-old fought from 0-4 down in the deciding set and battled through cramps to pull off the extraordinary win.

Elsewhere, world No 1 Iga Swiatek took some time to warm up on breezy conditions in Paris but got her French Open defence underway with a 6-4 6-0 win against Cristina Bucsa, following victories for Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff - but there was a surprise defeat for 2021 winner Barbora Krejcikova. After Medvedev’s shock defeat, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev were able to progress in the men’s draw.

Elina Svitolina beat Martina Trevisan in the French Open first round on Tuesday, before rounding on the “empty words” being spoken in the sport about the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Since last year’s attack on the eastern European nation, a succession of sports stars from Ukraine have attempted to keep raising awareness and support for their home country, but Svitolina wants more than just talk.

“What I found is a lot, I don’t know in a nicer way to say, but a lot of rubbish is happening around the situation where we have to focus on what the main point of what is going on,” Svitolina said after her 6-2 6-2 win.

“A lot of Ukrainian people need help and support and we are focusing on so many things, like empty words, empty things that are not helping the situation.”

Novak Djokovic eased into the second round of the French Open but risked inflaming political tensions in his home region with a message about Kosovo.

After a 6-3 6-2 7-6 (1) victory over American Aleksandar Kovacevic, who is of Serbian heritage, Djokovic wrote on the camera lens: “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence.”

Kosovo declared independence in 2008 but Serbia has never recognised that and violence broke out in the north of the country over the weekend after ethnic Albanian mayors were installed in Serbian-dominated areas, with NATO peacekeepers among those injured.

Serbia has troops stationed near the border and there are fears of a return to the violent conflict of 1998-99.

Speaking to Serbian journalists in comments reported by the country’s media, Djokovic, whose father was born in Kosovo, said: “I am not a politician, nor do I intend to enter into debates.

“As a Serb, it hurts me what is happening in Kosovo. Our people have been expelled from the municipalities. This is the least I could do. As a public figure, I feel an obligation to show support for our people and all of Serbia.”

Cameron Norrie has hit back at Novak Djokovic’s accusations of poor sportsmanship.

The pair had an unexpectedly fiery clash in Rome two weeks ago, with the main flashpoint coming when Norrie hit Djokovic on the ankle with a smash after the Serbian had turned away to walk back to the baseline.

In his press conference afterwards, Djokovic criticised Norrie not just for that moment but for what he perceived as the British No 1 celebrating in his face after winning points, as well as a medical timeout he took prior to the final game of the match.

Djokovic, who won the contest comfortably, said: “Those are the things that we players know in the locker room it’s not fair play, it’s not how we treat each other.”

Norrie did not see what the fuss was about, saying of the smash: “I apologised straight away and I didn’t see him. I looked up and hit the ball down low. I didn’t see him turn and concede the point.

“I wanted to win, it was one of those matches where he’s one of the best players in the world and I wanted to play my best and compete as hard as I could.

“I didn’t think I was in his face at all. I think, if anyone knows me, I’m pretty vocal in some matches. It was a regular tennis match for me.”

The Kosovo Tennis Federation is preparing an official complaint about Novak Djokovic’s on-camera message and will call for the 22-time grand slam champion to be fined.

After his first-round victory at the French Open on Monday, Djokovic wrote on the camera lens: “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence.”

Kosovo declared independence in 2008 but Serbia has never recognised that and violence broke out in the north of the country over the weekend after ethnic Albanian mayors were installed in Serbian-dominated areas, with NATO peacekeepers among those injured.

This was no fluke, either. Daniil Medvedev was a little short of his best, sure, but Thiago Seyboth Wild had to win that match, and played some incredible tennis. That forehand is quite something.

The Brazilian beams of his win: “I’ve watched Daniil play for my entire career and I’ve always dreamed of playing on this court. In my best dreams, I beat them. It’s a dream come true.

“I really just wanted to get angles, try to use my forehand against his. I mean, it worked pretty well,” he adds with a nervous chuckle.

“It was pretty tough. I’m reallly happy with the way I played.”

Thiago Seyboth Wild produced one of the biggest-ever upsets at the French Open as the world no 172 sent the second seed Daniil Medvedev crashing out of Roland Garros.

Seyboth Wild had not won a Tour-level match all year and arrived in Paris without a main-draw win at a grand slam, but produced a stunning performance to defeat Medvedev in five sets.

It was the fifth time Medvedev, the world No 2, had lost in the first round of the French Open but the Russian actually came into the tournament as one of the favourites after winning the Rome title last week and his improved form on clay.

Seyboth Wild, 23, was playing a fifth set for the first time but prevailed 7-6, 6-7, 2-6 6-3 6-4 to advance to the second round.
