French Open LIVE: Scores and results from Roland Garros after Gael Monfils wins five-set thriller

Thiago Seyboth Wild produced the upset of the French Open so far as the world No 172 stunned second seed Daniil Medvedev in five sets. The Brazilian, 23, arrived at Roland Garros having never won a main draw match at a grand slam but prevailed against the world No 2 7-6, 6-7, 2-6 6-3 6-4. Seyboth Wild produced an astonishingly aggressive game to secure the shock result, which was also the first time he had ever played a fifth set.

In the last match of the day, veteran home favourite Gael Monfils produced a stunning comeback in a frenzied late-night atmosphere to defeat Sebastian Baez in five sets. The 36-year-old fought from 0-4 down in the deciding set and battled through cramps to pull off the extraordinary win.

Elsewhere, world No 1 Iga Swiatek took some time to warm up on breezy conditions in Paris but got her French Open defence underway with a 6-4 6-0 win against Cristina Bucsa, following victories for Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff - but there was a surprise defeat for 2021 winner Barbora Krejcikova. After Medvedev’s shock defeat, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev were able to progress in the men’s draw.

There is no way the rest of the French Open tops this. The 36-year-old beats Sebastian Baez in an extraordinary fifth set after being 0-4 down. The Frenchman could barely walk by the end due to cramps and hobbled through the points. But in between his movement and shot-making was explosive, as was the crowd in the Philippe-Chatrier. The crowd was stunning - right through to after midnight. What a match.

What a win for Bianca Andreescu! The former US Open champion, who has not progressed past the third round of a grand slam since winning that title, prevails in three sets and over two hours against Victoria Azarenka.

It’s a brilliant result for the Canadian, who came from a set down and 1-3 in the second, in what was a excellent match overall. There was a lot of excitement around the meeting of two grand slam winners, and it delivered.

Daniil Medvedev had no regrets after being knocked out in the first round of the French Open, showing more relief that his claycourt season was finally over.

The red dirt is the world number two’s least favourite surface even though the Russian won the Rome Masters in the run-up to Roland Garros, and Medvedev made it even clearer on Tuesday after losing 7-6(5) 6-7(6) 2-6 6-3 6-4 to Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild.

“Every time it finishes I’m happy. So I’m happy. I’m happy again. Doesn’t matter, one time quarters, one time fourth round, a lot of times first round,” Medvedev told reporters.

“Today because of the wind and the dry court, I had my mouth full of clay since probably the third game of the match, and I don’t like it. I don’t know if people like to eat clay, to have clay in their bags, in their shoes, the socks, white socks, you can throw them to the garbage after the clay season. Maybe some people like it. I don’t.”

Thiago Seyboth Wild produced one of the biggest-ever upsets at the French Open as the world no 172 sent the second seed Daniil Medvedev crashing out of Roland Garros.

Seyboth Wild had not won a Tour-level match all year and arrived in Paris without a main-draw win at a grand slam, but produced a stunning performance to defeat Medvedev in five sets.

It was the fifth time Medvedev, the world No 2, had lost in the first round of the French Open but the Russian actually came into the tournament as one of the favourites after winning the Rome title last week and his improved form on clay.

Seyboth Wild, 23, was playing a fifth set for the first time but prevailed 7-6, 6-7, 2-6 6-3 6-4 to advance to the second round.

The Brazilian beams of his win: “I’ve watched Daniil play for my entire career and I’ve always dreamed of playing on this court. In my best dreams, I beat them. It’s a dream come true.

“I really just wanted to get angles, try to use my forehand against his. I mean, it worked pretty well,” he adds with a nervous chuckle.

The Kosovo Tennis Federation is preparing an official complaint about Novak Djokovic’s on-camera message and will call for the 22-time grand slam champion to be fined.

After his first-round victory at the French Open on Monday, Djokovic wrote on the camera lens: “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence.”

Kosovo declared independence in 2008 but Serbia has never recognised that and violence broke out in the north of the country over the weekend after ethnic Albanian mayors were installed in Serbian-dominated areas, with NATO peacekeepers among those injured.

Cameron Norrie has hit back at Novak Djokovic’s accusations of poor sportsmanship.

The pair had an unexpectedly fiery clash in Rome two weeks ago, with the main flashpoint coming when Norrie hit Djokovic on the ankle with a smash after the Serbian had turned away to walk back to the baseline.

In his press conference afterwards, Djokovic criticised Norrie not just for that moment but for what he perceived as the British No 1 celebrating in his face after winning points, as well as a medical timeout he took prior to the final game of the match.

Djokovic, who won the contest comfortably, said: “Those are the things that we players know in the locker room it’s not fair play, it’s not how we treat each other.”

Norrie did not see what the fuss was about, saying of the smash: “I apologised straight away and I didn’t see him. I looked up and hit the ball down low. I didn’t see him turn and concede the point.

“I wanted to win, it was one of those matches where he’s one of the best players in the world and I wanted to play my best and compete as hard as I could.

“I didn’t think I was in his face at all. I think, if anyone knows me, I’m pretty vocal in some matches. It was a regular tennis match for me.”
