Garbine Muguruza has not had the best summer.

After besting Serena Williams to win the French Open in June, the 22-year-old has struggled mightily.

She suffered an embarrassing loss in the second round at Wimbledon, and was dealt another early exit in New York Wednesday, falling to world No. 48 Anastasija Sevastova 5-7, 4-6.

The third-seeded Muguruza stole a break early in the match, but from then on it was all Sevastova. The aggressive, hard-hitting gameplan that helped Muguruza lift her first major trophy in Paris was nowhere to be seen at Arthur Ashe Stadium. She had 38 unforced errors and won less than half of her first-serve points.

Had she won the US Open, Muguruza could have overtaken Serena Williams for the world No. 1 ranking.
