French filly Treve wins Arc de Triomphe

PARIS (AP) -- The French filly Treve won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe by five lengths Sunday, capturing the world's richest turf race with a closing burst.

Ridden by Thierry Jarnet, Treve is undefeated in five races. She also won the Prix de Diane in June and Prix Vermeille last month.

Jarnet was aboard Treve after Frankie Dettori broke his right ankle in a fall Wednesday. The 46-year-old jockey also won the Arc with Subotica in 1992 and Carnegie in 1994.

''It was magical today because I had the luck to ride a great champion,'' Jarnet said.

Orfevre, the favorite, beat Intello by a neck for second place in the 17-horse field. Kizuna and Penglai Pavilion finished fourth and fifth in the 92nd running of the race.

On a soft track, Treve covered the 1 3/8 miles on the Longchamp racecourse in 2 minutes, 32.04 seconds.

Treve broke from the No. 15 hole and ran most of the race on the outside. The 3-year-old hardly seemed in contention halfway through, stuck in 14th place. But she made her move with about 2 1/2 furlongs to go, taking the lead and pulling away in the final straightaway.

''Until now, we didn't ask much from her,'' Treve's trainer, Christiane Head-Maarek, said. ''Today, she really showed she's a champion because the race didn't go well for her. ... I thought she had six gears but today she put the seventh gear on. And when she left, she won so easily.''

Japan hoped Orfevre would deliver the country's first Arc victory after narrowly losing to Solemia last year, but Treve proved too strong.

''I was surprised by Treve's performance,'' Orfevre's trainer Yasutoshi Ikee said.
