Miami has been quite active in the transfer market.

The latest player to transfer to the Hurricanes is former UCLA defensive end Jaelan Phillips. He announced Thursday evening that he was heading to Miami.

Phillips played two seasons for the Bruins and medically retired at the end of the 2018 season. He was apparently cleared to continue his playing career at Miami, however.

The DE was the No. 6 player overall in the class of 2017, though that promise never transferred into sustained production at UCLA because of injuries. He suffered a concussion in 2018 and was limited by injuries as a freshman in 2017. He played 10 games over two years and had 41 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

Phillips is unable to play in 2019 because of NCAA transfer rules unless he applies for a waiver and it’s granted.

Phillips is Miami’s 8th transfer arrival

Yes, that bolded text is accurate. Miami has now taken in eight transfers this offseason. New coach Manny Diaz is really looking to reshape his team’s roster.

Phillips joins high-profile players such as QB Tate Martell, S Bubba Bolden and RB Asa Martin as incoming transfers at Miami. Martell transferred from Ohio State after the arrival of Georgia QB Justin Fields to Columbus. Bolden transferred from USC and Martin came from Auburn, where the coaching staff screwed up his redshirt status.

Martin could be eligible immediately because of the redshirt fiasco at Auburn and Martell is petitioning to be immediately eligible in 2019.

Miami slumped in 2018 after a big year in 2017. The low point came in a blowout Pinstripe Bowl loss to Wisconsin and coach Mark Richt retired in the days after the game. That put Miami in a precarious spot with Diaz, the team’s defensive coordinator, already taking a head coaching position at Temple. But Miami was able to get the Miami native to come back home to be the head coach of the Hurricanes.
