Former Ottawa Senator Colin White Signs AHL Deal with San Jose Sharks Farm Club
On July 1st, former Ottawa Senators centre Colin White dropped his line into the NHL free-agent waters again. It's the third summer in a row he's been out here. Two years ago, he caught on with the Florida Panthers. Last year, it was a PTO with the Pittsburgh Penguins. But he didn't get a single bite so far this summer.
So he and his agent began fishing for an AHL opportunity, and on Tuesday, they snagged one with the San Jose Barracuda. White landed a one-year contract with the Sharks' top farm club to end his free agency and our terrible fishing metaphors.
"Colin brings a wealth of NHL and AHL experience to the Barracuda," general manager Joe Will said. "He will provide center depth, and we're excited for him to join our team."
White was the Ottawa Senators' 2015 first-round pick and is now 27 years old. After a 41-point season in his rookie year (2018-19), the Sens handed him a huge contract, paying him exclusively based on potential, which he never came close to living up to.
Ottawa eventually bought him out but will still be responsible for the majority of White's hockey income in the next few years. The Sens have a credit this year but will be paying him $875,000 a year in 2025-26, 2026-27, and 2027-28.
Last season, White split time with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Montreal Canadiens. He had zero points in 28 NHL games and is now at the stage where he has to prove he can be a valuable AHL player before the Sharks, the worst team in the NHL, even glance in his direction.
White only had 10 points in 21 games with Pittsburgh's top farm club last season.
