Former Michigan State DB killed in shooting in Canada

Ex-Michigan State defensive back Mylan Hicks was shot and killed in Calgary on Sunday morning. He was 23.

Hicks played for the Spartans from 2010-2014 and was playing in the Canadian Football League for the Calgary Stampeders. Per the CBC, Hicks was shot outside a nightclub and the shooting came from an altercation that started inside the club and then moved outside.

“Obviously this is an extremely difficult and upsetting time for the players and staff,” Calgary Stampeders general manager John Hufnagel said in a statement. “It’s a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mylan’s family.”

Michigan State issued a statement about Hicks’ passing as well.

“Our coaches, staff and players are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Mylan Hicks,” MSU coach Mark Dantonio said. “Mylan went at everything with a great deal of excitement. He just enjoyed playing football and being around our program. He was a great student as well, graduating from Michigan State.

“I had many personal talks with him during his five years here. He went 100 miles an hour. No. 6 was a beautiful person and just lit a room up when he walked in. He established himself as a leader on our football team in his last year. This is just tragic and has rocked our Spartan football community.

Hicks played in 32 games over his Michigan State career and had 27 tackles. He was the team’s 2014 recipient of the Biggie Munn Award, which goes to the team’s most inspirational defensive player.

A Detroit native, Hicks started at linebacker in the team’s Cotton Bowl win over Baylor. He had missed four games earlier that season because of a broken arm.
