Florida is making a promotion to replace defensive coordinator Geoff Collins.

The school said Friday it would hire former Miami coach Randy Shannon as the team’s new defensive coordinator. Shannon has been on Florida’s staff as the linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator since the arrival of coach Jim McElwain in 2014 and served as the team’s interim defensive coordinator in the Outback Bowl.

Shannon takes over the permanent defensive coordinator job after the departure of Collins to Temple. Collins was hired as the Owls’ head coach after Matt Rhule left for Baylor.

Shannon was Miami’s defensive coordinator from 2001-2006 and was promoted to the team’s head coach to replace Larry Coker. After going 5-7 in his first season at Miami, Shannon’s teams were over .500 in each of his next three. But he was fired at the conclusion of the 2010 season when Miami went 7-5 and lost to both Florida State and South Florida.

Florida’s defense suffocated Iowa’s offense in the Outback Bowl on Monday, shutting out the Hawkeyes after a first-quarter field goal in a 30-3 win. Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard was 7-23 passing for 55 yards and threw three interceptions.

Many of those players who starred in the Outback Bowl are off to the NFL. Cornerbacks Jalen Tabor and Quincy Wilson have declared along with linebacker Alex Anzalone.
