Did Rutgers find its 2017 starting quarterback on Wednesday?

Former Louisville quarterback Kyle Bolin said he’d be playing for the Scarlet Knights in 2017. Bolin, a graduate transfer, is eligible to play immediately.

A backup to Heisman-winner Lamar Jackson in 2016, Bolin threw 27 passes. In 2015, he was 78-137 passing for 1,154 yards, seven touchdowns and six interceptions.

In addition to heading to a school where he has a great chance to start in 2017, Bolin bolsters a quarterback position that’s quite thin for Rutgers. Zach Allen, who transferred to the school from TCU, tore an ACL during spring practice and Tylin Oden transferred.

Allen’s injury and Oden’s transfer left walk-on Troy Anthony and junior-to-be Giovanni Rescigno as the only two healthy quarterbacks on Rutgers’ roster. Rescigno, who coach Chris Ash called the “clear No. 1” earlier in April, started the final five games of 2016 for the Scarlet Knights. He was 86-163 passing for 889 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions in 2016.

All five of those starts were losses, including two shutouts. After wins over Howard and New Mexico following a season-opening loss to Washington, Rutgers ended the season on an eight-game losing streak.
