Kansas State’s new quarterbacks coach is a guy who wasn’t playing quarterback for the Wildcats very long ago.

The team made the hire of former QB Collin Klein to the position official on Tuesday. Klein inherits a spot on the Kansas State coaching staff vacated by co-offensive coordinator Del Miller, who retired Monday after 20 years at the school.

Klein worked at Kansas State in 2014 and 2015 before spending 2016 as an assistant coach with Northern Iowa.

“Following Del will not be the easiest thing for one to do, but Collin – having been tutored under Del’s guidance – will do well,” Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said in a statement. “Fortunately, Del will remain with us through the spring to continue to mentor Collin during the out-of-season program and in spring practices. Collin will serve as the quarterback coach and [wide receivers coach] Andre Coleman will coordinate the passing game along with [offensive coordinator] Dana Dimel.”

Klein rushed for 50 touchdowns and threw for 29 in his two full seasons as Kansas State’s starting quarterback in 2011 in 2012. He finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting to Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel and Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o in 2012.

Miller has been at Kansas State since Snyder’s arrival and will officially leave when his contract expires in May. Snyder announced Monday that he had been diagnosed with throat cancer, though he said the treatment schedule won’t affect his responsibilities as head coach.
