Former New York Giants head coach and Jacksonville Jaguars executive Tom Coughlin fractured four ribs, and spent the night in the hospital after being involved in a bicycle accident, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter.

Coughlin, 73, ran into another man on a bike while riding in the woods. Coughlin told ESPN the man came “out of nowhere.” Coughlin also suffered a slightly punctured lung and needed stitches in his head as a result of the accident.

Coughlin initially went home following the accident, but was convinced by his family to go to the emergency room. He spent a night in the hospital due to his injuries. Coughlin will need 4-6 weeks to recover.

Tom Coughlin fired by Jaguars last December

After returning to the Jaguars as an executive in 2017, Coughlin was fired last December. After going 10-6 in 2017, the team has gone a combined 11-21 over the past two seasons. On top of those struggles, Coughlin drew ire from the NFLPA for creating a combative work environment in Jacksonville. Roughly 25 percent of all player grievances came from Jaguars players when Coughlin was with the team.

Prior to his 2017 stint with the team, Coughlin coached the Giants for 12 seasons. He won two Super Bowls with the team. He also coached the Jaguars during the franchise’s first eight seasons.
