Former Chargers OT McNeill will retire

After six NFL seasons, Marcus McNeill has decided to retire.

McNeill, 28, spent his entire career with the Chargers and became one of the league's elite left tackles almost immediately upon entering the league. He was named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons after being selected in the second round of the 2006 draft.

Health issues soon slowed him down, however. He dealt with neck issues dating back to 2008 and he missed 12 games over the past two seasons, including seven games in 2011 after suffering a stinger in Week 10.

The Chargers released him in March and he remained a free agent after visiting a few teams in the spring.

On Twitter, McNeill indicated he would be retiring, and he thanked the Chargers and their fans for their support.

"I'll always be a (Charger) for life," he said.
