Former Canucks Around The World: Olli Juolevi

Plenty of former Vancouver Canucks have carved out successful careers around the world after leaving the organization. Whether playing for some of the best teams in Europe or excelling in non-traditional hockey markets, these one-time Canucks continue to apply their trade outside of North America. Today, we look at Olli Juolevi, who spent the 2023-24 season with Tappara in Liiga.

Juolevi had high expectations during his time in Vancouver. Drafted fifth overall in 2016, he struggled to get in the lineup consistently and finished his Canucks career with just 23 games of NHL experience. Before the 2021-22 season, Vancouver decided to trade him to Florida in a move that benefited the Canucks as they received Noah Juulsen as well as Juho Lammikko.

After a stint in the AHL with the San Diego Gulls during the 2022-23 season, Juolevi headed back to Europe in 2023-24, initially joining Timrå IK in the SHL. He would play nine games for Timrå IK before leaving the SHL and joining Tappara in Liiga in November. After signing, Julovei would play 40 regular season games as well as 16 in the postseason, helping Tappara capture their third straight championship.

Signed to a one-year extension, Juolevi is ready to start his second season with Tappara. On top of defending the Liiga Championship, Juolevi will be expected to perform well in the upcoming Champions Hockey League. While there is still a chance the 26-year-old defender will return to the NHL one day, right now, it looks like he is destined for a long career in Finland.
