The Philadelphia Flyers are currently engaged in “ongoing discussions” with the Detroit Red Wings about Petr Mrazek, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.

The reason why the Flyers are in the market for a goaltender stems from a pair of injuries they have suffered in the crease. Brian Elliott underwent core muscle surgery on February 13th and he’s expected to be out for five-to-six weeks.

Meanwhile, backup goalie Michal Neuvirth was forced to leave the Flyers’ game against the New York Rangers on Sunday due to a lower-body injury.

After the injury to Elliott, a report from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press suggested that the Red Wings offered Mrazek to the Flyers for a third-round pick. Philadelphia declined the trade at the time, but the club has reportedly revisited trade negotiations after Neuvirth went down with an injury.

Mrazek, 26, has shown flashes of being a solid net-minder but he has not been consistent. His .910 save percentage and 2.89 goals against average in 2017-2018 are an improvement on the poor numbers he posted last season (.901 SV%, 3.04 GAA).

Mrazek would not be a long-term play for the Flyers as the Czech-goaltender is a restricted free agent after this season.

The Flyers are currently tied with New Jersey for third-pace in the Metropolitan Division. With the Hurricanes, Islanders and Blue Jackets all within 7-points, the Flyers are far from securing a playoff spot.

The next goalie up for the Flyers would be Alex Lyon, who has just one win in two career NHL starts. Losing both Elliott and Neuvirth is problematic, so a trade for Mrazek could be the short-term solution the Flyers need in order to stay competitive.
