The Florida Panthers have a new goal song for 2022. Actually, they have 20 of them.

Sam Bennett’s shot got past Antti Raanta for the Florida Panthers’ first home goal of the preseason and the distinctive banging piano chords of Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets” rung throughout FLA Live Arena.

The song title is a play on Bennett’s nickname — his teammates and coaches call him “Benny” — and the center said “that song gets me going.”

A few periods later, Brandon Montour scored and Billy Joel’s “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” played.

Those are just two of the 20-plus songs the Panthers will use to celebrate goals during the 2022-23 NHL season. In the offseason Florida decided to scrap Jimmy Eat World’s “Sweetness” as its goal song after five years of Sunrise singing its elongated, “whoa,” dating back to 2017. Its replacement isn’t one familiar song fans will hear three, or four or five times per game, but rather a different one every time a different player scores, hand-picked by the player.

“That was hand-picked by me,” Bennett said Thursday. “They actually played that for me in Calgary and I loved it, so I thought I’d try and bring it over here.”

Apparently, it means Montour is just a big Joel guy, unless he’s one of those few players who hasn’t picked a song yet.

“Most guys picked their songs,” Bennett said. “I’m not sure if everyone has theirs in yet, but I’m sure most of the guys will have the songs that they like the most.”

The Panthers’ 5-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday meant a limited setlist.

Anton Lundell said wants to keep his a surprise.

“Be patient,” the center said.

Panthers continue preseason in Carolina

The Panthers held a limited practice Friday at the arena, mostly with the players who didn’t suit up Thursday.
