Matthew Tkachuk of the Calgary Flames will have a hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety after his high elbow to the face of Drew Doughty late in the first period of Sunday’s game.

With the puck coming behind the Los Angeles net, Tkachuk tried boxing out Doughty along the boards. As he attempted to keep the Kings blue liner away from the puck, he smacked him right in the mouth with his elbow.

“He’s a pretty dirty player, that kid. To be a rookie and play like that is a little surprising,” Doughty said via LA Kings Insider. “I don’t know exactly what happened because I got hit in the head, but I thought he elbowed me. I can’t tell you for sure, so I’m not going to really say if I think anything should happen, but whatever it was, it hurt pretty bad, and it’s going to hurt for a little bit.”

You see that Doughty took a quick peek to see the way Tkachuk was positioning his body as the puck was coming behind the net; but in no way should he expect an elbow to the mouth while he’s being blocked out from gaining possession. The Flames rookie doesn’t have a disciplinary history in his short time in the league, but we suspect that’ll change very soon.

The hearing will take place on late Monday after the Flames land in Washington ahead of a three-game road trip.
