Yahoo Sports Here's your first look at ESPN's Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa documentary, 'Long Gone Summer'
After “The Last Dance” captivated the sports-loving populous, ESPN is next turning its attention to one of baseball’s most famous summers — a homer-bashing, controversy-swirling time that baseball fans are still trying to reconcile more than 20 years later.
“Long Gone Summer,” a 30 for 30 documentary about Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa’s 1998 home-run chase, will debut June 14 and today Yahoo Sports is giving you a first look at the trailer.
Notably, “Long Gone Summer” features in-depth, sit-down interviews with Sosa and McGwire, both of whom have been relatively quiet about their fabled home-run chase since it became shrouded in the shadow of the performance-enhancing drugs controversy.
Sosa, in particular, has never publicly admitted to using PEDs during 1998. While the “Long Gone Summer” trailer doesn’t give us Sosa’s long-awaited public admission, the preview at least points toward the notion that Sosa might be opening up like never before.
“I was hungry,” Sosa says in the trailer, “to be somebody.” Then he adds: “We shocked the world.”
The story of their race to 61 homers (and beyond) is told through the lens of director AJ Schnack, whose previous work includes about documentaries about Kurt Cobain and the band They Might Be Giants.
Also of note musically: Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy — who is from the St. Louis area and now lives in Chicago, if you like tight narratives — composed the score for “Long Gone Summer”
