When you think of sunscreen, you probably think of thick white lotion that leaves you sticky and stuck with a white cast. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Black Girl Sunscreen, an SPF 30 non-sticky lotion, was created especially for Black women by a Black woman. And yes, it dries clear.

The brand’s tagline is, “Sunscreen made by women of color for people of color, because we get sunburned too.” Founder Shontay Lundy created the brand to help protect the Black community, hoping to dispel the myth that those with dark skin tones don’t need sun protection. Lundy worked with skincare professionals to get the formula right, providing protection and skincare benefits all in one product.

“We have created a sunscreen for everyday use, filled with natural ingredients that will protect your skin from the sun and doubles as a moisturizing lotion,” the Miami-based brand writes on its website.

Black Girl Sunscreen dries clear, making white casts on brown and Black skin a thing of the past. Plus, it’s water-resistant for 80 minutes after application. The brand says the product is also specially formulated for use under makeup products as a moisturizer. Additionally, Black Girl Sunscreen is fragrance-free, which makes the product perfect for use on the face and for those with sensitive skin.

The product is paraben-free, cruelty-free and vegan. The sunscreen is furthermore oxybenzone and octinoxate-free, making the product coral reef-safe. But it’s not only what the product leaves out that makes it shine. Black Girl Sunscreen uses avocado oil, jojoba oil and sunflower oil to soothe and moisturize. The brand also uses cacao and carrot juice in its formulation to help even out hyperpigmentation and boost the skin’s natural healing. And the product is not oily or greasy, according to buyers.

Notably, Black Girl Sunscreen also has a recycling program, which helps customers keep their empty bottles out of landfills. Send back your bottles for free and the brand makes sure they are recycled properly.

“No white cast, no fragrance and doubles as a moisturizer?” one customer comments. “It’s perfection in a bottle.”

Another buyer says, “For the first time, I have confidence in a sunscreen made for me. I love that not only is it super translucent, but that it is moisturizing.” Could you ask for anything more?
