The sanctioning body of Formula One has officially opened up a process for new teams to join the grid.

The FIA said in its release that it is open to organizations with serious intent to join the sport. Potential applicants would have to prove they have the technical capability and financial resources to run a modern F1 team, no small task. They'll also have to lay out their sustainability plan and how it'd make a positive impact. All parties will have to achieve carbon neutrality in their F1 activities by 2030.

Per, the earliest a new team could join is 2025. The new powertrain rules go into effect in 2026, and we already know that Audi will be joining as an engine manufacturer for that season. Andretti is also working on getting in, with Cadillac as a partner. Expanding the total number of automakers and teams involved may draw fresh eyes to the sport, which is already experiencing a huge boon in viewership, especially in America.
