'Feud: Capote vs the Swans' Is Appointment Viewing

Things are heating up in Ryan Murphy's latest FX series, Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, which dives into Truman Capote’s dismantling of his own friend group: a league of powerful New York socialites. “They were like the original housewives,” Murphy told Town and Country. Indeed, the Swans are all married to powerful men and run New York's high society. Before Capote’s betrayal, their days were filled with event planning and social appearances—but now, their top priority is taking Capote down.

Feud: Capote vs The Swans is based on true events. As the story goes, Capote struggled to write his next novel after penning Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood. So, he began probing the lives of his friends. Capote’s inner circle at the time included a myriad of wealthy, well-connected women, such as Barbara “Babe” Paley, Gloria Guinness, Marella Agnelli, Slim Hayward, Pamela Churchill, C.Z. Guest, and Lee Radziwill (Jackie Kennedy’s sister). Imagine their surprise when Capote published "La Côte Basque, 1965" in Esquire, which included intimate details about their lives.

Though the taste of what would become Capote’s Answered Prayers was fictional, he based the characters and their struggles on the women he’d grown close to. After publishing the story, Capote was cast out of high society for his betrayal. Answered Prayers was never finished, but its legacy lives on. Feud: Capote vs. the Swans is also adapted from Laurence Leamer’s novel Capote’s Women, which chronicles Capote's dramatic downfall. But first, he has to take down the Swans.

FX’s adaptation stars Tom Hollander as Capote. Many of his lines are also entirely lifted from the Esquire piece. A star-studded crew plays the Swans, including Naomi Watts (Babe Paley), Diane Lane (Slim Keith), Chloë Sevigny (C.Z Guest), Calista Flockhart (Lee Radziwill), Demi Moore (Ann Woodward), and Molly Ringwald (Joanne Carson). The series premiered on January 31, 2024.

In the last episode, “It’s Impossible,” Capote tries to host a ball in hopes that The Swans might attend and make amends. It doesn’t work out. The Swans plan to decline his invitation, but Capote cancels the event before they have the chance. Meanwhile, Capote's former best friend, Babe Paley, learns that her cancer is getting worse (unbeknownst to the rest of the group), and her husband, Bill, is having an affair with Slim. The Swans might be trying to take Capote down, they clearly have bigger issues on their hands.

The next episode premieres tonight at 10:00 pm on FX. Look below for a guide on how (and where) to watch the rest of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.
