Fashion influencer Sai de Silva talks balancing motherhood and running her brand

In this five-part series, wellness entrepreneur and new mom Hannah Bronfman speaks with other moms and experts about all the life-changing topics that come with motherhood — from pregnancy and postpartum health to balancing mom life and a career.

Fashion influencer Sai de Silva has taken mom style to the next level with her popular Instagram account, @scoutthecity. And not only is the mom of two sharing her own enviable ensembles, de Silva is also shining the social media spotlight on her kids — daughter London, 9, and son Rio, 4.

“You have such a bossy Instagram,” new mom Hannah Bronfman gushes in her latest Baby Banter video, calling de Silva her ultimate girl crush. “I feel like you are working 24/7.”

De Silva is definitely a busy New York City mom, balancing cool brand partnerships with In The Know product round-ups, fashion-forward video posts on TikTok and Instagram — and, you know, motherhood.

In fact, it was that blend of social media and mom life that helped de Silva get her start.

“I was a new parent, this Instagram thing was very small, and I kind of did it just to meet other parents,” the mom of two says. “I was like, ‘Where are the cool moms?'”

As de Silva started posting outfits of the day (OOTDs) of her then-2-year-old daughter, her fashion street cred — and mom community — took off. She now has nearly 500,000 combined followers on Instagram and TikTok.

But how does de Silva balance it all?

“I wish that I could say I had some crazy secret of balance, but really at the end of the day, I’m just winging it,” de Silva tells Bronfman. “I’m just trying to glaze it over and make it look real good.”

That said, the super-stylish mom does have a hard stop around 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., she says, when it’s time to cook dinner. That’s strictly family time, she adds, when everyone starts to wind down from the day.

“I just try and find balance, I guess, where I can,” de Silva says.

Setting boundaries

Another aspect of balance is deciding just how much of her family life to share, including where to set boundaries and draw lines.

“When I first had London, she actually starting modeling before I started blogging. She was a kid model for quite some time, a few years, and I think her getting that experience made her … she was just open to taking photos,” de Silva says about her daughter’s comfort in front of the camera, comparing her ease to Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé’s alter ego.

However, boundaries do exist. Not only does the attentive mom have to watch out for creepers on social media, she adds, “I don’t ever want to do anything that my daughter will be embarrassed about when she’s older.”

She also doesn’t want her kids’ teachers knowing where they vacay. “It feels weird,” she says.

With London growing up in front of the camera, de Silva says she’s ready to branch out and create her own channel. The proud mom has already taught her daughter the basics of creating a brand.

“I really like that we have that time together because it really teaches her how to be an entrepreneur and what direction she goes in, what her work ethic going to be,” de Silva says.

Offering advice to Bronfman, who is mom to 5-month-old Preston, de Silva reminds her to take all the photos and videos because they grow up — and want to branch out — so quickly.

“You’re going to wake up, and the next thing you know [Preston will] be 4, and you’re almost sad, like, where did the time go?” de Silva says. “Just don’t take those moments for granted.”
