Pick 'Em Up: Last call on getting Parise for nothing

As part of our journey into the depths of the merciless world of fantasy hockey, Yahoo Sports will sift through the grease and deliver you the goods on how to tweak your roster each week.

Monday, in case you haven’t heard, is Adds Day. Now a couple solid weeks into of the NHL season, some prime value candidates have emerged alongside a former Top 10 guy who is rounding back into elite form.

Here’s the players you should target on your league’s waiver wire (or via trade, if you’re feeling frisky) right now.

Up Front

Tomas Tatar may cool down, but he’s look to keep a big role in Montreal. (Graham Hughes/CP)

Tomas Tatar, LW/RW, Canadiens (56% owned)

The man aptly named close to that tasty, tangy sauce you put on your fried fish has delivered a delicious start to his season on the offensive side of the puck, putting up three goals, eight points, 2 PPP, 21 shots on goals and a pus-5 rating through his first seven games as a Canadien. He’s averaged more than 10 fantasy points per contest and will likely skate in Montreal’s top-six all season long.

Zach Parise, LW, Wild (58% owned)

Hop on the Parise train now before it leaves the station for good, as the Wild winger is getting gobbled up quickly in many leagues after a torrid start to the season. The 34-year-old has delivered three tallies, 10 points, a plus-seven rating, 25 shots on goal and 14 blocks through his first eight contests and if he can avoid being a bandaid and stay healthy enough to dress the majority of games this season, Parise could be in for a career rip.

Chris Tierney, C, Senators (19% owned)

The Senators obviously had a bit of a stench lingering around them as an organization entering the season, but through the dumpster fire have emerged some solid value fantasy options, and Tierney is right in that mix after burying a pair of ginos, adding seven helpers and four power-play points while averaging 9.3 fantasy points per contest. It’s probably very unrealistic to expect his pace to continue the whole season, but might as well grab him now on the cheap and ride that Tierney wave until it crashes.

Adam Lowry, C, Jets, (13% owned)

Lowry is real nice in both grit and offensive categories and certainly worth a pick up if you’re in one of the majority of leagues which Lowry is still available. His 20 hits and six blocked biscuits compliment his scoring production perfectly, as the versatile Jets forward has put up four buries (including a shortie), five points and 17 shots while garnering a plus-four rating in the early going.

Blueliners

Josh Morrissey, Jets (41% owned)

Winnipeg’s minutes-muncher is averaging a career high 23:15 TOI per game while anchoring the team’s top pairing alongside Jacob Trouba and running the show on the team’s stacked PP1. Morrissey has had a sizzly start to his third NHL campaign, posting points in five of his past seven games, including one goal, six assists, three power-play points, and 10 SOG.

Alex Edler, Canucks (39% owned)

As far as the indisputable eye test goes, Edler looks as steady as ever and is on pace to approach his career high in points. He’s been feeding Vancouver’s forwards a steady diet of juicy apples with his top-tier stretch pass ability, and he’s a certified grit factory, too, as he leads the NHL in blocked shots by a decent margin.

Damon Severson, Devils (2%)

Gotta love a nice steal. The New Jersey blueliner is widely available in most Yahoo leagues and has been on a heater to open up his season, recording points in five of his first six games while flying pretty much under the radar like he has most of his career. Perk up your D-depth with a guy who looks poised to tangle some twine this year.

Tenders

Juuse Saros, Predators (60% owned)

In my recent (brilliant) bold predictions piece, I mentioned that Saros would have a chance to play as many if not more games then Pekka Rinne this season. So, in the name of being right, I was able to muster up enough cash and bribed Kevin Fiala to smash into Rinne and put him on the IR. You’re welcome, Juice, and you’re welcome too, random fantasy player.

Anders Nilsson, Canucks (27% owned)

The 28-year-old Swede is very, very large man and his play between the pipes so far this season has matched that massive frame. Picking up dubs in three of his four starts and sporting a .925 save percentage and 2.26 GAA, Nilsson has been a huge part of the Canucks’ surprising early success and looks to have the inside edge on the No. 1 job as Jacob Markstrom has been pretty leaky in the early going.
