Fantasy hockey: One player to add for each category in Week 10

In Week 9, the waiver wire strategy was easy. The Anaheim Ducks played five games, so just adding any half-productive member of the team was the right play.

Unfortunately, no team is scheduled to compete in five games in any fantasy week for the remainder of the 2021-22 season, which makes this week's task a little more difficult.

12 teams across the league will skate in four games over the next seven days, however, which means there are plenty of quality options for managers to choose from.

Here is one player to add for each category for Week 10 of the fantasy hockey season.

Goals: LW/RW Eeli Tolvanen, Nashville Predators (25 percent rostered on Yahoo)

As I wrote in my most recent 10 fantasy hockey takeaways blog, it's Tolvanen Time.

The Nashville Predators forward has recorded a goal in four of his last five games after being held to just one marker through his first 23 contests. Prior to his most-recent goal-scoring spree, the winger owned a lowly 1.6 shooting percentage. That number has risen to 6.8 percent over his last several outings, but that number should only continue to rise.

The 2017 first-round pick's career shooting percentage sat at 17.1 percent ahead of the 2021-22 campaign, which is a good indicator that the current rate he's been stuffing the back of the net at is unsustainably low. Considering the Preds play four games this week, I suspect Tolvanen will continue to put pucks past puckstoppers. He's one of the best adds in all of fantasy hockey.

Assists: C Ryan Johansen, Nashville Predators (42 percent rostered on Yahoo)

Ryan Johansen was added to the NHL's COVID-19 protocol on Sunday and missed the Predators' game against the New York Rangers. His placement into the protocols doesn't necessarily mean he tested positive for the virus, so it's unclear how long he will be out. Whether he misses extended time or not, he's still someone I'm looking to proactively add in fantasy hockey.

Johansen has been reaching the stat sheet frequently for the Preds, as he's notched 15 points in his last 11 contests. Of those points, 12 have been assists, which has made the 29-year-old one of the best setup men to own in the league.

In addition to helpers, Johansen has also been a great source of power-play points with eight, and faceoff wins with 247.

Johansen's rostered percentage continues to rise on Yahoo, but he still remains available in over 50 percent of leagues. Considering the Preds play four games this upcoming week, Johansen will likely rank very highly in the category over the next seven days if he's able to suit up. If he can't, he's still worth adding and stashing on injured reserve. His 16 apples on the year are tied for 31st in the NHL.

Plus-minus: RW Mats Zuccarello, Minnesota Wild (50 percent rostered on Yahoo)

If you're looking for some positive results in the plus-minus category, it's probably wise to pluck players from one of the hottest teams in hockey.

The Minnesota Wild have won eight of their last 10 contests dating back to Nov. 24, and in those outings Zuccarello has posted a plus-five rating despite missing a pair of games with an upper-body injury. The Wild did drop both of their contests over the weekend, but I expect the squad to see some more positive results, which means there will be more plus outings for the Swiss winger on the horizon.

Zuccarello is heating up offensively, too, as he's recorded a point in seven of his last eight contests and has totalled four goals and five assists during this stretch. Seeing time on the team's first power-play unit, also, the 34-year-old has notched a point on the man advantage in four of his last five outings.

The Wild only play three games this week, but with a stat like plus-minus, you don't necessarily need a four-game week to be a solid contributor. He is the go-to player to add in this category who's available in exactly half of Yahoo leagues.

Power-play points: C/RW Pius Suter, Detroit Red Wings (4 percent rostered on Yahoo)

Some of the players listed above like Johansen and Zuccarello are great adds for those who need a power-play points boost, but Suter has also turned into a decent player in that category recently.

Over his last five games, the Detroit Red Wings middleman has recorded two points on the power play and is featured on the team's top man-advantage unit. Additionally, Suter has recorded a point in seven of his last eight outings and has played 18 minutes or more in each of his previous three outings.

He doesn't carry a whole lot of value in any of the defensive categories like blocked shots or hits, but he's heated up recently. Suter and the Wings play three games in Week 10 of the fantasy hockey season.

Shots on Goal: C/RW Evan Rodrigues, Pittsburgh Penguins (34 percent rostered on Yahoo)

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been hit hard with absences to key forwards this season, and with both Bryan Rust and Jake Guentzel on injured reserve, Evan Rodrigues will continue to see an expanded role.

Over the last 30 days, the 28-year-old's 53 shots are tied for the 15th-most in the NHL, and he even had a 12-shot performance recently, which is the most shots in a single game this season. With the aforementioned absences, Rodrigues will slot right next to Sidney Crosby on the Pens' top line, a development that'll keep him fantasy relevant until Rust and Guentzel return.

In addition to shots on goal, Rodrigues has been a solid offensive contributor. He's tallied eight goals and 19 points through 27 games this season and has posted a serviceable plus-six rating. He's also averaged better than a body check per game with 29 hits.

Pittsburgh only plays three games this week, but with Guentzel out week-to-week and Rust still on IR, Rodrigues is someone whom fantasy managers will be able to ride for multiple weeks.

Faceoff Wins: C Ryan Getzlaf, Anaheim Ducks (49 percent rostered on Yahoo)

Ryan Getzlaf returned to the Anaheim Ducks' lineup this past weekend after dealing with a lower-body injury, and although he didn't register any points, he did return to his faceoff-winning ways.

The middle man won 20 faceoffs in the two games he played in and logged over 20 minutes of ice time in each, which is a pretty good sign that he's over whatever ailment he was dealing with. Even though he's missed five games this season, his 278 draw victories sit tied for eighth in the NHL.

Even though Getzlaf and the Ducks only play two games this week after their marathon of a Week 9, he's still someone worth adding as he'll provide quality contributions to the category for the remainder of the season. Getzlaf has been useful in fantasy for a variety of categories, as he's produced 19 assists, 20 points, six power-play points, 43 hits, and 24 blocks in 25 outings. With a 1.7 percent shooting percentage that's bound to rise, the 36-year-old even offers a little bit of upside, too.

Hits: LW/RW Blake Coleman, Calgary Flames (32 percent rostered on Yahoo)

I'll be honest, there aren't a lot of great options available for those who need to add a little more grit to their squad, but Blake Coleman is likely the best player to target.

In this hits department specifically, Coleman has been just fine. He's recorded 61 checks in 27 games this year, and he's put together six straight multi-check games.

The offence hasn't quite been there for the winger, as he's recorded just one goal and three points over his last 21 games. There are some trends, however, that suggest some goals are on the way.

Coleman's fired off 80 shots in 27 games this year, but only has four goals to show for it. That's resulted in a relatively low 5.0 percent shooting percentage, well below his career number of 9.5 percent. This is a good sign that a goal-scoring correction is coming.

Still posted up inside the Calgary Flames' top-six, he's seeing solid deployment for fantasy purposes. He and the Flames play four games this week.

Blocks: D Colton Parayko, St. Louis Blues (34 percent rostered on Yahoo)

I really wanted to write about Mario Ferraro again, but I've written about him nearly every week I've done this, so I'll give someone else the spotlight.

Colton Parayko is logging minutes on the St. Louis Blues' top defence pairing and has been blocking shots at an impressive rate. The blueliner has totalled 16 blocks over the past 14 days, which is tied for the 12th-most in the NHL during that stretch. Additionally, he's been finding the stat sheet fairly frequently of late, tallying a point in five of his last eight outings.

There's not much else Parayko brings to the table, but that's the case with most players who specialize in blocks. He and the Blues play three games in Week 10, but the consistency and recent offensive numbers are worth taking a chance on.

Goaltending: G Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings (47 percent rostered on Yahoo)

I didn't think it'd play out like this, but Jonathan Quick has somehow managed to turn back the clock this season.

The 35-year-old netminder won each of his three starts last week, allowing just two goals while picking up a shutout against the Dallas Stars. The string of strong performances bolstered his yearly numbers, raising his save percentage to .933 percent, and lowering his goals-against average to 2.04.

Quick's resurgence grades out well league-wide, as his 14.8 goals saved above expected mark sits third in the NHL, and just .1 behind Jack Campbell and Igor Shesterkin for the best rating, according to MoneyPuck.

He and the Los Angeles Kings play four games this week, so he'll likely make at least two starts over the next seven days.
