  • The docuseries Cheer on Netflix follows the Navarro College cheerleading team as they compete for another national title. The second season just dropped.

  • One question fans have been asking after watching the series is what does FIOFMU stand for?

  • Head Coach Monica Aldama set the record straight as to what FIOFMU means and why it's kept a secret in the first place.

Often overshadowed by other athletes on the field, cheerleading is finally getting its time in the spotlight thanks to Netflix's hit TV show, Cheer. The six-episode documentary series follows the elite cheer squad from Navarro College on their journey to the National Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida, chronicling all the highs and lows, both emotionally and physically along the way.

And now, it's back for season two.

So yeah, cheerleading is a serious sport at Navarro College. (ICYMI: They've won several national and grand national titles under its current head coach, Monica Aldama.) But it also turns out that being on the team comes with a set of secrets, too. While fans are loving the realistic look at cheering, they're also wildly eager to be in on the untold, ~mysterious~ parts that aren't exactly explained in the series, like the meaning of "FIOFMU."

Lucky for all you inquiring minds out there, Women's Health got the inside scoop from Coach Monica herself:

So... what the heck does FIOFMU mean?

The acronym shows up plenty of times in Cheer. Team members write it on their arms and have practice uniforms emblazoned with "FIOFMU" that they wear on the reg. It's also frequently added as a hashtag to the cheerleaders' posts on Instagram and Twitter.

So, what's the deal? Coach Monica gives some insight as to what the letters mean. "It’s not an uncommon thing in the cheerleading world to have letters that signify you’re part of a really special family," she tells Women's Health. "It’s just an acronym for something that we like to keep to ourselves. It's your encouragement to make it through [the cheerleading season] and puts you together as a family." Noted.

Despite the social media craze from Cheer fans, there have been few clues as to what "FIOFMU" actually stands for. A definition on Urban Dictionary that has since been removed claimed it stands for "Fight it out f*** ’em up," but for now, at least, the Navarro College team members aren't offering much explanation.

In fact, FIOFMU might be Navarro College's best-kept secret.

Basically, the players have to "earn" the right to learn what each individual letter means throughout the year. "Right before Daytona, you get that last letter," explains Aldama. "It’s not like you have to do a specific physical thing or anything like that. It’s just a matter of working hard."

That doesn't just mean taking part in the competitions, she adds. It includes being involved with the team's community service, cheering at the school's football games, and participating in so many more team-related activities.

Kayla Culver, who identifies herself as a Navarro cheerleader on Twitter, also offered up this brief explanation: "#FIOFMU is a coded message/motto, that you learn and earn throughout the year while on the team. Learning the meaning is entirely special and is only known by Navarro Cheerleaders and Navarro Cheer alumni🙂"

I guess when you're a team that dominates as much as Navarro College, you've probably earned the right to keep a few secrets.
