Ex-Rams, Patriots running back Sony Michel joining crowded Dolphins backfield

The Miami Dolphins continue to stockpile running backs.

Former New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams back Sony Michel is joining the Dolphins, a league source confirmed to The Post on Monday night.

Michel, 27, won a ring with the Rams last season after starting seven regular-season games and rushing 208 times for 845 yards (a 4.1 average) and four touchdowns. His impact was limited in the postseason, however, carrying 26 times for 80 yards (3.1) and no TDs in four games.

Michel (5-feet-11, 215) now joins a crowded backfield in Miami. The Dolphins added Raheem Mostert and Chase Edmonds in free agency and have veterans Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed, which should make the position a focal point in training camp to see who emerges from the pack.

By joining the Dolphins, Michel is coming home. He was born in Orlando and was a standout at American Heritage in Plantation, Florida.

Michel was drafted in the first round out of Georgia by the Patriots in 2018 and ran for 931 yards as a rookie and 912 in Year 2. He was limited to 449 yards in nine games in his final season in New England in 2020.

For his career, Michel has 743 rushes for 3,137 yards (4.2) and 18 TDs. He also has 47 receptions for 386 yards (8.2) and two scores.

Some of Michel’s best days have come against the Dolphins. He has 104 carries for a career-high 437 yards and four TDs against Miami in six outings.
