Yahoo Sports Ex-Ohio State QB Matthew Baldwin is transferring to TCU
Former Ohio State quarterback Matthew Baldwin is returning to his home state.
Baldwin was competing with Georgia transfer Justin Fields for the starting job in Columbus during spring practice. However, he decided to transfer last month. On Wednesday, he told multiple outlets that he will continue his college football career at TCU.
Baldwin, a native of Austin, Texas, told 247Sports that he will file a waiver with the NCAA in an effort to gain immediate eligibility. Otherwise, he has three seasons of eligibility remaining. He plans to arrive on campus in June.
Baldwin was a four-star recruit in the 2018 class who enrolled early at OSU. He took a redshirt for his lone season with the Buckeyes but was thrust into a prominent role on the depth chart after Dwayne Haskins left for the NFL and Tate Martell transferred to Miami. OSU subsequently added Kentucky transfer Gunnar Hoak after Baldwin transferred.
Before transferring, Baldwin threw for 246 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Ohio State's spring game, splitting time between the first and second teams.
At TCU, Baldwin joins a crowded quarterback room without much depth chart clarity. The Horned Frogs also have Kansas State graduate transfer Alex Delton, junior Michael Collins, redshirt freshman Justin Rogers and true freshman Max Duggan on scholarship at quarterback.
Delton played in 20 games during his time at Kansas State with six starts. During that span, Delton threw for 1,202 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for 868 yards and 11 scores. Collins, a transfer from Penn, threw for 1,059 yards and six touchdowns in four starts for the Horned Frogs in 2018. Rogers and Duggan were both four-star recruits.
TCU went 7-6 in 2018.
