Yahoo Sports Ex-Auburn, Akron head coach Terry Bowden to work with Clemson as unpaid intern
Terry Bowden has signed on to help out with the Clemson football program — and he won’t earn a dime for his time.
According to multiple outlets, Bowden, the former head coach at Auburn and Akron, will work as an unpaid intern for the Tigers while pursuing a Master’s degree at the school.
The 63-year-old Bowden is enrolled in a graduate program for athletic leadership, a Clemson spokesperson told ESPN. TigerNet.com first reported the news.
Bowden, the son of legendary Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden and the brother of former Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden, spent the last seven seasons as the head coach at Akron.
Bowden compiled a 35-52 record over that span and led the Zips to one bowl win (2015 Potato Bowl) and one MAC East Division title. He was fired after the 2018 season when the Zips finished with a 4-8 record.
Before going to Akron, Bowden was head coach at Samford from 1987-1992 and Auburn from 1993-1998. Auburn had a 47-17-1 record under Bowden, including an 11-0 record in 1993, but he resigned after a 1-5 start in 1998. From there, he spent a decade as a college football analyst before returning to the sideline in 2009 at North Alabama.
