Everton vs Southampton LIVE: Result and reaction from Premier League fixture tonight

Both sides enjoyed fantastic starts to their seasons, vying for position at the very top of the table, but it’s Everton who’ve managed to at least partially sustain their momentum. The Toffees sit seventh in the league but boast two games in hand over every team above them, and could move into the top four if they are able to take full advantage. Carlo Ancelotti’s side are in terrific spirits, too, after finally ending their miserable record in the Merseyside derby and defeating Liverpool at Anfield last time out.

Meanwhile, Southampton have seen their early progress all but wasted after a dire slump which peaked with the club’s 9-0 thrashing by Manchester United. The Saints’ last league win came on 4 January and they have fallen down to 13th in the table but remain seven points and a game in hand clear of the relegation zone. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side did manage to frustrate Chelsea in a goalless draw to bring their miserable run of defeats to an end.
