Everett Silvertips beat Victoria Royals in 5OT to end longest playoff game in CHL history

With his second goal of the game, Everett Silvertips forward Cal Babych made history Sunday night, putting the finishing touches on what is now the longest playoff game in the history of the CHL.

Babych scored the eventual game-winner against the Victoria Royals in the fifth overtime period, ending a marathon game that endured through 151 minutes and 36 seconds of play. The goal also puts an end to the Royals’ season as the club is eliminated from the Western Hockey League playoffs in six games.

The marathon game sets new records in both the WHL and CHL. The longest playoff game ever recorded in WHL history took place in 2003, when the Kamloops Blazers and Kootenay Ice skated through 136 minutes and 56 seconds of play. The previous CHL record featured the Victoriaville Tigers and Hull Olympiques in a game that took 146 minutes and 31 seconds to complete back in 1999.
