Even with their strong offseason, are the Jaguars ready for the playoffs?

Every year is a new and fresh start for each team in the NFL. The teams try their best to get stronger in the offseason through free agency and the draft. There is no doubt that the Jacksonville Jaguars had a successful offseason so far. Even with the additions that they have made, there are arguments on whether or not the Jags are ready for postseason football.

The Jaguars haven’t seen the playoffs since 2007. Each year they tend to get a little stronger but not strong enough to make the playoffs. This past offseason, the Jaguars improved a majority of their team. They should finally have a strong running game with Leonard Fournette. The defense improved with free agents Calais Campbell and A.J. Bouye and they didn’t lose anybody who has made a serious impact for the team.

Even with this strong offseason, it’s still up in the air if the Jaguars are playoff bound or not. I think Jacksonville has a strong team on paper, now it’s just a matter of making plays on the field. If Blake Bortles can lead his squad and lower his interceptions, he can definitely get Jacksonville to the playoffs. The only problem is that Bortles has to play well at a consistent rate.

Head coach Doug Marrone and new executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin should be the right men to lead the Jaguars. They are disciplinarians and this young Jaguars team needs discipline. While discipline will help them, is it enough for them to get to the playoffs?

The biggest factor that could keep the Jaguars back from the playoffs is Blake Bortles’ game. It’s not Bortles, but it’s his game. When Bortles stays focused and on his game he makes excellent plays. The unfortunate part is that we rarely see that side of Bortles. In three years, Bortles has eleven wins. Unacceptable for a player that was considered the face of the Jaguars.

The Jaguars have all the little pieces to be a contender in the league. Their biggest piece on the team needs to go big this year. I think if Bortles can produce this year and utilize the offense that is built around him, he will be in good shape and win some games for the Jaguars. If he continues to play the way he has been, the Jaguars could miss out on the playoffs again and Bortles could be on his way out of Jacksonville.
