Eric Berry makes one of the plays of the season to steal a win for the Chiefs

Safety Eric Berry decided that the Kansas City Chiefs weren’t going to lose on Sunday.

He put the Chiefs in a good spot with an interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter off MVP candidate Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons. And when the Falcons rallied late, Berry made one of the biggest plays of this NFL season.

The Falcons took a 28-27 lead with 4:32 left, and went for the two-point conversion to try to go up by a field goal. But Berry stepped in front of a Ryan pass and returned it all the way for two points for the Chiefs. The Denver Broncos won in a similar situation at the New Orleans Saints earlier this season on a blocked field goal returned for two points, and this was Berry’s chance to take advantage of the relatively new NFL rule that conversions can be returned by the defense for two points.

The Chiefs ended up running out the clock after Berry’s big play and won 29-28 over the Falcons, with Berry’s two-point interception return being the difference.

Berry’s story is one of the best in the NFL. He missed most of the 2014 season while he battled cancer. He returned last season and immediately reestablished himself as one of the best safeties in football. He made a Pro Bowl and was named All-Pro last season. He has played well again this season and on Sunday he was the key piece in the Chiefs’ upset.

It’s rare to see a game turn so dramatically on one play, and especially rare to see a two-point try go the other way and be the difference in a game. But Berry made a play that could be enormous in the AFC West race.
