Emmerdale star Katherine Dow Blyton reflects on Harriet's shock death

Emmerdale star Katherine Dow Blyton has opened up about her exit from the show after playing Harriet Finch in the ITV soap for almost ten years.

Katherine's run in the soap ended dramatically when her character passed away due to injuries she received when her quad bike overturned in a storm while searching for teen Amelia Spencer.

Now, months on, she has revealed that it took a while to decompress after the show and that she is open to all career opportunities.

"I got three months' notice I was being killed," she told Inside Soap.

This gave her time to prepare. "In a way you leave before you physically leave; you say goodbye emotionally because you know it is coming," she added.

"However, I made friends for life at Emmerdale – I'm always asking how people are getting on, and whether there's any gossip!"

Confirming the close bonds she has made, she added that several cast members have booked tickets to see the play she is currently starring in, A Passionate Woman, at Leeds Playhouse.

Stating that it was the "longest" time she had worked on any one project, she also opened up about life after the soap and getting to sleep in on a morning.

She said: "Afterwards, I needed to decompress a bit. It has been almost ten years commuting up from London every week. And I am not getting any younger, let's face it!"

Katherine continued: "I needed a bit of time, not setting my alarm for 5.30 am, to spend time with my dog Dexter and see my friends.

"I really enjoyed taking a breather and just thinking about what I'm going to do in the future."

In addition to Emmerdale, the actress has previously had short stints in two other soaps. She played Sally Hunter in Hollyoaks between 2001 and 2005 and appeared in five episodes of Coronation Street, but she says she is done with soaps – for now at least.

"I think it's scratched, that itch," she stated.

"I'm kind of throwing my career open to the universe, for good or bad. I think I just need to take my foot off the gas and not panic."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
