EastEnders star Max Bowden hits back over online trolling

EastEnders star Max Bowden has criticised social media trolls who have targeted one of the soap's writers, Daran Little.

Little shared a post on Twitter yesterday (June 1) asking for people to stop sending hateful messages, especially regarding the storylines and air time given to the soap's gay characters.

"Maybe it's because I'm still an emotional wreck after last night's EastEnders but I'm really fed up of constantly being accused of hating gay characters on the show. In my 35 year career in soap I've created and supported endless gay characters. Just, back off will you?"

This came after recent scenes saw Ben Mitchell's shock Walford exit and subsequent return to be with the dying Lola Pearce-Brown.

Bowden – famous for playing Ben since 2019 – showed his support by retweeting Little's message and sharing alongside it: "Quite literally responsible for Ballum's creation in chemistry with his phenomenal 'I smell queer' scene. A terrific writer."

The soap star went on to share a second post that wanted trolls to consider the effort that goes into creating the show and requested the negative comments be kept to themselves.

"STOP TAGGING ACTORS AND WRITERS IN ABUSE AND NEGATIVITY. Our job is to tell the story!!! We work SO hard to bring you 2 hours of content EVERY WEEK. Regardless on your view of a character or an episode's work, stop making it known to the people working their arse off for it!"

Bowden recently opened up on Lola's cancer storyline, saying it "has been the hardest I have ever had to deal with" after losing a friend to a brain tumour in real life.

"Telling this story with Lola has been a tough old ride but an incredibly rewarding one. When we lose someone, we never know how we’re going to feel, how we're going to change. Ben is no exception.

"Every one of the Mitchells are dealing with it very differently, and that's credit to the writing team and the story team."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
